Fountain Valley High School Announces New Boys’ Basketball Head Coach

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) is thrilled to announce Brendan Holmes as their new boys’ basketball head coach.

Brendan Holmes steps into the varsity head coach position at FVHS after leading their boys’ junior varsity and freshman teams over the last two years. As a Marina High School (MHS) alumni with a list of impressive accolades, Holmes is no stranger to the Huntington Beach Union High School District (HBUHSD) and is ready to lead the Barons with immense basketball knowledge. Holmes was a four-year varsity starter, three-year varsity captain, and three-year MVP at MHS, where he helped lead the 2006-07 team to a record-breaking season. The Vikings broke both the state record for three-point shots made in a game with 28 and the National record for three-point shots made in a season with 437, crushing both the previous state record of 303 and the National record of 382. In the 2007-08 season, Holmes broke the Orange County single-game record for three-pointers made in a game with 13 and became the second leader in CIF all-time for three-point field goals made in a season with 149. Holmes also led the country (2008) and California (2008-2010) in three-point field goals made in a season. By the end of his high school career, he became Marina’s all-time leading scorer with 2,015 points and second leader in CIF all-time three-point field goals with 409 threes. He also was named three-time All-Sunset League first-team player and two-time All-CIF player.

Holmes continued his education and athletic career at the Dominican University of California, competing in NCAA Division II men’s basketball. After discovering a passion for mathematics and teaching, Holmes transferred to Vanguard University to pursue his Bachelor’s degree and single-subject credential in Mathematics while continuing to play basketball. Holmes is currently a math teacher at Bell Intermediate, where he’s been teaching since 2013. His coaching career also began in 2013 as the FVHS varsity boys’ basketball assistant coach before becoming the Ocean View High School freshman boys’ basketball head coach from 2015-2018. At OVHS, Holmes was also the varsity boys’ basketball assistant coach in 2018 and took over as head coach in 2019.

“I am thrilled to be the new varsity boys’ basketball coach at Fountain Valley High School!” exclaimed Brendan Holmes. “The Baron community has made me feel so welcome and I truly appreciate it. I look forward to helping our players develop and challenge themselves every day as we push to compete in the Sunset League!”

FVHS Principal Paul Lopez shared, “We are ecstatic to announce Brendan Holmes as the next boys’ basketball head coach at FVHS! Brendan has a wealth of experience from high school to college as a player and a coach. I have watched Brendan coach in our program for the last two years and his passion for the game is unmatched! He is a person of high integrity and character and embodies what it truly means to be a ‘players coach’. We look forward to the program Brendan puts together for our Baron Family!”

HBUHSD is excited to welcome Brendan Holmes into the head coach position at FVHS, and we can’t wait to see the boys’ basketball program take new heights under his leadership.
