The Huntington Beach Union High School District has taken the next step towards 21st Century communication with the addition of Twitter. The Twitter messaging system allows for real-time correspondence with our target audience. Twitter was identified as the next logical step in a technology plan that has recently standardized email accounts for staff members, created Gmail accounts for students, and has begun professional development in the instructional potential of Google Docs. Future technology plans include a redesigned website and a critical analysis of the communication and instructional uses of applicable technology.
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a way to instantly communicate with people who volunteer to receive updates from an individual or organization. These people are called ‘subscribers’ or ‘followers’ and can receive updates sent directly to their mobile devices. HBUHSD Twitter messages (also called tweets) also post directly to our website (www.hbuhsd.edu) for public viewing. Tweets are limited to 140 characters, allowing followers to get concise information in bite sizes. Posters may attach links to articles or videos for followers to review at their leisure.
How does HBUHSD utilize Twitter?
We recently created a Twitter account for anyone interested in following our district. We currently have a growing group of followers who chose to receive messages directly to their personal electronic devices. It is more difficult to measure the number of people checking our website for tweets. The tweets are posted through the Educational Services Division at least three times per week. Topics have covered eclectic issues ranging from the recent flash mob with the Fountain Valley High School community to the National Common Core standards.
What is the ultimate goal?
We hope to grow our Twitter followers in time by posting interesting and relevant information for all stake-holders. The automatic posting of all tweets on our website should also increase the professionalism of our communication and may eventually allow for a two-way dialogue with our community.
