Westminster High School Unveils Seventh Mural Project: A Fusion of Art, Education, and Cultural Exchange

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Westminster High School (WHS) proudly launches their seventh mural project, an innovative collaboration between esteemed visiting artist Sam Lo of Singapore and the creative minds of WHS students. Led by art teacher Daina Ellis, the project promises to infuse the school and local community with vibrant colors, cultural symbolism, and artistic prowess.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Ellis, students embarked on a transformative journey, immersing themselves in the style and previous works of the selected artist. Drawing inspiration from the artist's repertoire and incorporating elements of their local heritage, students crafted initial sketches that encapsulate the essence of their community, which were then presented to Sam Lo, serving as the catalyst for the creation of a final masterpiece.

The mural began with a captivating projection party on Sunday, May 26, where its outline was illuminated, setting the stage for an awe-inspiring week of artistic expression. Guided by Mrs. Ellis and Sam Lo, students spent each day throughout the week refining their skills, learning new techniques, and delving into the rich tapestry of global cultures.

“Art transcends boundaries,” explained WHS teacher Daina Ellis. “It weaves an inclusive tapestry that reveals a common thread of our shared community.”

On Friday, May 31, a joyous celebration was held to reveal the completed mural with the addition of student cultural performances, esteemed local dignitaries, including HBUHSD Board of Trustee members, and proud school administrators.

“Painting with the students at Westminster High has been nothing but wholesome, and I certainly learned a lot from my time there,” shared artist Sam Lo. “Thank you for having me; these are memories I’ll always cherish.”

This year's installment marks the seventh milestone in Mrs. Ellis' illustrious art program, building upon the legacy of past collaborations with artists from Southern California, Canada, Spain, and South Korea. Through the transformative power of art, Westminster High School continues to redefine boundaries, enrich communities, and inspire generations to come.
