HBUHSD Professional Development Focus for English Learner Support

Constructing Meaning” is a comprehensive approach for developing academic English proficiency that will provide us with a means to implement effective, ongoing, districtwide PD. CM will give our teachers tangible strategies across the content areas for supporting our English Learners while also impacting all student learning.

LCAP Reference:

English Learner Support (Goal 2, Action 7): Ensure all English learners receive both designated and integrated English Language Development support and access to the standard instructional program with instruction designed for English learners to develop proficiency in English as rapidly and effectively as possible.  Where applicable, establish an Emerging Pathway program for newcomers who have been in US schools for less than two years.

Professional Development and Support for Certificated and Classified Staff (Goal 1, Action 6): HBUHSD will continue to provide professional development for certificated and classified staff. Professional learning opportunities are primarily planned around strategies, programs, or topics addressing identified needs of English learners, low-income students, and foster youth…associated with…Programs for English learners, including both integrated and designated English Language Development (Aligned to Goal 2, Action 7)

Initial Training

Teacher Strand (5 days)

Each year, schools in HBUHSD will select a small cohort of teachers to attend the full five-day series for initial CM Teacher Training. The training will typically be scheduled during the school day by sub release. The goal of our multi-year PD plan is for all teachers to be trained in CM strategies.

Each PD builds a research-based, student-centered vision of instruction that is both practical and immediately applicable. Constructing Meaning is organized around six key skills:

  1. Backwards Design
  2. Language as part of Content Teaching
  3. Structured Student Talk
  4. Interactive Reading and Note-making
  5. Academic Writing Support
  6. Use Assessment to Refine Instruction

These skills will prepare teachers to:

  • Understand the role language plays in content learning
  • Backward map to clarify lesson goals and determine what language knowledge students need to both access content and express their understanding
  • Learn and refine use of routines to support productive student talk
  • Use tools and templates to bolster academic reading and writing
  • Examine student work to inform next steps in language and content instruction

Our District began our partnership with E.L. Achieve during the 2021-22 school year to offer Constructing Meaning training to our teachers.

Ongoing Teacher Training and Support

Offered by EL Achieve:

Returning CM Trained Teachers Only - CM Summer Seminar: Once a teacher completed the initial 5-day training series, they will have an opportunity to participate in the Summer Seminar. This intensive week-long summer program will build upon previous training. During the seminar, teacher leaders learn to support others in designing, refining, and delivering instruction, and to facilitate ongoing learning and collaboration sessions. The goal is for participants to gain a deeper knowledge of the initiative so they can support colleagues in building their Refining Our Practice skills and applying the vision of explicit language instruction.  Every participant who completes the week-long training will be a “Certified Leader.”

Offered by HBUHSD:

Instructional Leadership Strand - Principal and Assistant Principals

District leaders, principals, and coaches responsible for implementation have additional sessions set aside for honing observation and facilitation skills, problem-solving, and establishing processes that ensure English learners receive adequate and appropriate language instruction. Instructional leaders gain straightforward tools to design, support, monitor, and evaluate the level and quality of English learner program implementation and student achievement.
